Hey, children! Leave those screens alone

I have written before about the menace too much screen time can cause to children at school; concentration levels decrease, sleep comes harder, and mental health can suffer.

Indeed, I noted how Sweden – once lauded for its education – was reversing its decision to encourage more screen time for learning.

Now we read that some schools in London are going in the opposite direction and using virtual reality headsets to help pupils cope with stress caused by impending exams.

I think that ACTUAL reality would be better than VIRTUAL reality.

So here are a few tips for children taking exams this summer.

  1. Proper organised preparation and revision over a timely period
  1. Enough rest and regular meals
  1. Go for walks and get fresh air
  1. Go to bed early the night before the exam and get up early to go over your revision one last time
  1. Ensure you have a healthy breakfast before the exam
  1. Be positive and stay calm
  1. Get to the exam room at least half an hour before the start

The important thing is to be in a good state of mind beforehand, and if you do these seven thing,s it should help greatly.

I always remember one of my teachers talking about revision when I was at school. His main advice was to take longer over mealtimes and to enjoy engaging with others.

I found this really helpful as it punctuated the many hours I would spend revising and going over materials.

In order to help our children with mental health issues, exam stress, and all the other things that affect them, let’s encourage them to leave their screens alone.

Time away from phones, tablets, and TVs, and instead being outdoors and getting exercise will benefit the whole person, physically and mentally.
